Continuous Visiting Behavior – Measurement Model

Abstract

The Continuous Visiting Behavior—Measurement Model (Cahigas et al., 2023) was developed to identify the primary determinants influencing the intention for continuous visiting behavior (CVB) among tourists selecting travel accommodations in Palawan, Philippines. This instrument functions as a comprehensive Measurement Model, initially comprising 30 items adapted from established sources (e.g., El-Adly, 2018; Al-Refaie, 2014). The scale evaluates nine distinct constructs relevant to tourist decision-making and post-visit intentions, integrating concepts from the Uncertainty Reduction Theory and the Expectation Confirmation Theory. The development process confirmed the scale’s psychometric properties through rigorous Factor analysis, reliability testing, and validity assessment using a sample of Filipino adult participants.

Purpose

The primary purpose of this Continuous Visiting Behavior—Measurement Model is to empirically assess and quantify the various determinants that contribute to a tourist’s overall Tourist Satisfaction with specific travel accommodations. The model seeks to measure how pre-visit expectations, perceived performance, and service quality factors influence the likelihood of a tourist returning to the same destination or accommodation.

The assessment is specifically tailored to understand the complex pathways leading to repeat visitation intentions (CVB) in high-value tourist destinations, such as Palawan, by integrating factors related to service quality, environmental perceptions, and expectation management.

Construct

The scale is fundamentally designed to measure the complex construct of Tourist Behavior, specifically focusing on the Behavioral Intention to return or demonstrate loyalty, which is operationalized as Continuous Visiting Behavior (CVB). The conceptual framework is built upon two core psychological theories: the Uncertainty Reduction Theory (addressing information gathering before booking) and the Expectation Confirmation Theory (addressing post-consumption satisfaction).

The measurement instrument originally evaluated nine latent variables: Interactive Uncertainty, Perceived Performance, Confirmation, Physical Environment, Attitude of Employees, Service Experience, Price Acceptance, Tourist Satisfaction, and Continuous Visiting Behavior. Two initial constructs, Passive Uncertainty and Food and Beverage, were ultimately removed during the final scale refinement due to psychometric criteria not being met.

Validity

The validity of the model was thoroughly assessed using both convergent and discriminant validation procedures.

Convergent Validity: Convergent validity was established for the majority of constructs. The Average Variance Extracted (AVE) values for Interactive Uncertainty (IU), Perceived Performance (PP), Attitude of Employees (AE), Service Experience (SE), Price Acceptance (PA), Tourist Satisfaction (TS), and Continuous Visiting Behavior (CVB) all exceeded the suggested threshold of 0.50. However, the AVE values for the Confirmation (C) and Physical Environment (PE) constructs fell below 0.50. The authors justified the retention of these constructs based on the criteria from Fornell & Larcker (1981), which permits lower AVE if the Composite Reliability (CR) is at least 0.60, a condition met by the study.

Discriminant Validity: Support for Discriminant Validity among the nine latent variables was confirmed. This assessment involved comparing the constructs’ variances and evaluating the Heterotrait-Monotrait (HTMT) ratio, thereby ensuring that each construct measured a unique aspect within the overall structural model.

Reliability

Internal Consistency: The internal consistency of the instrument was found to be strong across all measured constructs. The resulting Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranged from .73 to .91, indicating high reliability for the scale components used in the final model.

Factor Analysis

Confirmatory Factor Analysis: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to verify the hypothesized factor structure of the measurement model. Following the removal of initial items and two constructs (Passive Uncertainty and Food and Beverage), the factor loadings associated with each remaining measure successfully passed the minimum cut-off threshold of 0.50, affirming the structural integrity of the refined model.
