COVID-19 Importance Measure

Abstract

The COVID-19 Importance Measure (CIM), developed by Wirtz et al. in 2023, is a specialized 21-item instrument designed to assess the perceived importance of various COVID-19 infection prevention measures among specific populations. The scale items were derived from national prevention guidelines, public informational materials, and qualitative interviews with the target population. Initial psychometric evaluation, including factor analysis and reliability testing, was conducted on a German sample of expectant mothers and mothers of infants. The instrument demonstrated high internal consistency, supporting its use in measuring attitudes toward preventive health behaviors during the pandemic.

Purpose

The primary objective of the COVID-19 Importance Measure questionnaire is to empirically examine and quantify the degree of perceived importance participants attribute to a comprehensive set of COVID-19 prevention measures implemented during the pandemic.

Construct

The scale measures the psychological construct of Perceived Importance of Adherence to COVID-19 Protection Measures. This construct reflects an individual’s subjective value judgment regarding the necessity and relevance of specific actions required to mitigate infection risk. Exploratory factor analysis suggested that this overall importance might be separable into two highly correlated dimensions: the Importance of adherence to hygiene rules and the Importance of practicing physical distancing.

Validity

No specific data regarding criterion or construct validity is currently available for this scale, as reported in the initial publication.

Reliability

The scale exhibits high internal consistency, which is a key measure of reliability. The calculated Cronbach’s alpha for the 21-item instrument was reported as 0.947, indicating excellent interrelatedness among the items.

Factor Analysis

An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was performed on the 21 items related to the importance of complying with COVID-19 protection measures. The EFA initially suggested a single-factor solution, which demonstrated satisfactory to good model fit (TLI = 0.956; CFI = 0.960; SRMR = 0.054). This single factor accounted for 58% of the data variance. However, a two-dimensional solution was also considered as an alternative structure, yielding noticeably better global model fit values (CFI = 0.978, TLI = 0.972; SRMR = 0.039). Despite the improved fit of the two-factor model, the two resulting constructs were highly correlated (r = 0.787). Furthermore, three items lacked clear factor assignment due to weak or double loadings, complicating the definitive adoption of the two-dimensional structure.

Instrument

Test Type: Original Inventory/Questionnaire

Format: The instrument utilizes a 6-point Likert-scaled response format for assessing the importance of adhering to COVID-19 prevention measures. The response options range from 1 = extremely important, 2 = important, 3 = rather important, 4 = rather unimportant, 5 = unimportant, 6 = extremely unimportant.

Items of the COVID-19 Importance Measure

Number of items

This is a 21-item scale.

Factors and Subscales

Subscales identified in the analysis include: Importance of adherence to hygiene rules and Importance of practicing physical distancing.

Items

Participants are asked to respond to the following items using a 5-point Likert scale ranging from Extrem wichtig to Unwichtig.
