Shuttle walk test

Abstract

The Shuttle Walk Test (SWT) is a standardized, maximal exercise capacity assessment designed to determine the functional capacity and exercise tolerance of individuals, particularly those suffering from chronic cardiopulmonary conditions such as cardiac disease and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Derived conceptually from the established Shuttle Run Test, the SWT requires the patient to walk back and forth along a 10-meter course demarcated by two cones. The walking pace is strictly regulated by auditory signals (beeps). Each period between two consecutive signals is referred to as a ‘shuttle’.

The speed progressively increases throughout the test as the time interval between the auditory signals is systematically reduced. The test is terminated when the patient can no longer maintain the required pace or reaches a predefined safety limit. The total distance walked is recorded and used as a primary outcome measure, offering a robust, field-based estimate of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max).

Due to the standardized nature of the auditory pacing and the fixed 10-meter circuit, measurement error is minimized.
