De WEZT gaat in zinsniveau-stoornissen. Het instrument is gericht op alle typen afasie en is niet de bedoeling de aard of de ernst van de afasie vast te stellen, maar heeft tot doel het opstellen van een stoornisgerichte therapie. De lijst is zo opgesteld dat ze makkelijk en snel afgenomen en gescoord kan worden. Er worden alleen die variabelen onderzocht waarbij therapie mogelijk is in Nederland of waarvan de wetenschap aangeeft dat ze succesvol behandeld kunnen worden.

Het instrument heeft productietests en begripstesten opgenomen. De patiënt krijg bijvoorbeeld auditief een werkwoord aangeboden waarna hij moet kiezen welke van de vier plaatjes bij het werkwoord hoort. De vier alternatieven zijn: het doelplaatje, een plaatje van een semantisch gerelateerd werkwoord, het plaatje van een semantisch gerelateerd zelfstandig naamwoord en een zelfstandig naamwoord dat gerelateerd is aan het verwante werkwoord.
