Behavioral Approach System

Abstract

The Behavioral Approach System (BAS) and the Behavioral Avoidance (or Inhibition) System (BIS) scales were developed by Carver and White (1994) to quantify individual differences in two fundamental motivational systems underlying human behavior. Theoretical models suggest that the Behavioral Approach System (BAS) regulates appetitive motives, driving the individual toward desired goals, rewards, and positive stimuli. Conversely, the Behavioral Avoidance (or Inhibition) System (BIS) regulates aversive motives, prompting avoidance or inhibition of behavior in the face of unpleasant stimuli or potential punishment. Construct

The scales are rooted in Gray’s Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST), a biological theory of personality that posits two major neural systems responsible for regulating responses to environmental cues.

  • Behavioral Approach System (BAS): This system is activated by cues of potential reward or non-punishment. Its function is to initiate and maintain approach behavior, generating emotions such as hope, excitement, and happiness. High BAS sensitivity is associated with goal-directed behavior and the vigorous pursuit of incentives.

  • Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS): This system is activated by cues of potential punishment, novelty, or conflict (simultaneous cues for reward and punishment). Its function is to interrupt ongoing behavior and increase arousal and attention, generating negative emotions such as anxiety and worry. High BIS sensitivity is associated with avoidance behavior and heightened vigilance toward threats.

Validity

The BIS/BAS scales demonstrate strong construct validity, consistently correlating with theoretically relevant measures. High BAS scores typically correlate positively with measures of positive affect, extraversion, and sensation seeking, while high BIS scores correlate positively with measures of negative affect, neuroticism, and anxiety disorders.

Discriminant validity is supported by the finding that the BIS and BAS scales generally show weak or modest correlations with each other, suggesting they measure distinct motivational dimensions rather than opposite ends of a single spectrum. Furthermore, the BAS subscales (Drive, Fun Seeking, Reward Responsiveness) have demonstrated unique predictive power for different types of approach behaviors, confirming their utility as separate measures.

Reliability

The scales possess acceptable to high levels of internal consistency. Across numerous studies, the overall internal psychometric properties of the scales, typically measured using Cronbach’s alpha, have shown the BIS scale and the three BAS subscales to be reliable measures of their respective constructs.

Specifically, the BIS scale and the BAS subscales (Drive, Fun Seeking, Reward Responsiveness) typically yield reliability coefficients ranging from approximately .70 to .80, indicating that the items within each factor consistently measure the intended dimension of incentive sensitivity.

Factor Analysis

Initial factor analysis of the item set intended to capture diverse manifestations of the BAS empirically resulted in a three-factor structure for the approach system, alongside a single factor for the inhibition system.

  • BAS Fun Seeking: Reflects the desire for immediate reward and engagement in potentially thrilling or novel activities. This subscale is noted by the authors to contain elements of impulsiveness not present in the other approach scales.

  • BIS: Measures sensitivity to signals of punishment and non-reward, resulting in worry and avoidance.

Although the BAS scales were not initially intended to be combined, the authors advise against their aggregation, as they focus on distinct aspects of incentive sensitivity.
