Abstract
The Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation-II (BFNE-II) is a 12-item self-report measure developed as a revision of the original Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation (BFNE) scale (Leary, 1983). Its primary purpose is the efficient measurement of Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE), a central component of Social Anxiety Disorder. The revision, conducted by Carleton and colleagues, addressed methodological limitations in the original BFNE, primarily by rephrasing four reverse-worded items into straightforwardly worded statements to improve psychometrics. The BFNE-II exhibits excellent internal consistency and strong construct validity.

Purpose
The BFNE-II was developed to provide a brief, methodologically clean, and psychometrically sound instrument for assessing the degree to which an individual fears being judged or evaluated negatively by others. This fear is a critical transdiagnostic factor in various anxiety and mood disorders, but is most closely associated with social anxiety.
The revision was specifically motivated by the need to eliminate measurement error and confusion associated with the reverse-worded items present in the original BFNE, thereby producing a scale that more purely measures the FNE construct.
Construct
The BFNE-II measures the psychological construct of Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE). FNE is defined as the apprehension experienced when confronted with the possibility of unfavorable judgments, criticism, or rejection from others. This construct is fundamental to understanding the etiology and maintenance of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).
While the original BFNE correlated with measures of social avoidance, the BFNE-II aims to be a purer measure of FNE severity, distinguishing it clearly from behavioral avoidance tendencies (Social Avoidance, SA).
Validity
The construct validity of the BFNE-II has been well-established in the literature. It correlates highly with the original BFNE scale, confirming that it measures the intended construct. Furthermore, research indicates that the BFNE-II more accurately depicts FNE compared to measures of social avoidance, such as the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SADS) (Watson & Friend, 1969), supporting its discriminant validity from related constructs.
The revision process itself was intended to enhance validity by removing the methodological issues associated with reverse-worded items, which often introduce unwanted variance or confusion in self-report measures (Taylor, 1993).
Reliability
The BFNE-II demonstrates excellent reliability, particularly in terms of internal consistency. Studies consistently report high coefficient alpha values, indicating that the 12 items reliably measure the same underlying dimension of FNE. This strong internal consistency supports the use of the total summed score for clinical and research applications.
Factor Analysis
Empirical evidence derived from factor analyses consistently supports a unitary solution for the BFNE-II. This finding confirms that the scale is unidimensional, meaning all 12 items contribute to the measurement of a single, cohesive construct, namely Fear of Negative Evaluation.
Instrument
Test Type: Self-report questionnaire / Screening tool
Format: 12 items rated on a 5-point Likert scale.
Language Available: Primarily English (Original research).
Population Group: Clinical and Non-clinical populations, including individuals with anxiety and mood disorders.
Age Group: Typically used with adolescents and adults.
Population Details: Has been validated across diverse samples, including patients diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
Test Methodology: The scale consists of 12 straightforwardly worded items (e.g., “I am afraid that others will not approve of me”). Items are rated typically from 0 (not at all characteristic of me) to 4 (extremely characteristic of me), although the presentation format sometimes uses 1 to 5.

Permissions & Fee and Test Year
The initial revision and validation studies were published in 2006 (BFNE-R) and 2007 (BFNE-II). The scale is generally considered available for research and clinical use, though researchers should consult the original authors or publishing journals regarding specific permission requirements.
Scoring: Scoring involves simply summing the client’s ratings across the 12 items. A cutoff score of 25 (out of a maximum of 48, assuming 1-5 scoring in the provided table, or 48 if using 0-4 scoring and adjusting the maximum) has been suggested as indicative of clinically significant social anxiety. Further interpretation guidelines are provided in Carleton, Collimore, McCabe, and Antony (2011).
