- Impersonal Orientation (I): Characterized by feelings of helplessness, incompetence, and lack of control over outcomes. Individuals high in this orientation believe that successful exercise is largely a matter of luck or external forces, and they often feel incapable of regulating their own behavior effectively.
Validity
Initial validation studies (Rose et al., 2001) supported the structural validity of the ECOS, demonstrating that the items reliably load onto the three hypothesized factors (Autonomy, Control, and Impersonal). Construct validity has been established through correlations with other measures of motivation and exercise behavior. Specifically, the Autonomy orientation is typically associated positively with autonomous forms of behavioral regulation (e.g., intrinsic motivation) and positive exercise outcomes, such as adherence and well-being.
In contrast, the Control orientation is often linked to controlled regulation (e.g., external and introjected regulation) and is less predictive of long-term adherence. The Impersonal orientation consistently correlates with amotivation and poor behavioral outcomes, indicating its strong predictive validity for exercise dropout. Reliability
